IPL 2024 CSK Retained Players
Ambati Rayudu
Middle-order batsman Ambati Rayudu retired from all cricket records after CSK’s title triumph at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Rayudu’s performance in IPL 2023 has not been good, his bat has been quiet for most of the tournament.
He scored only 142 runs in 12 matches at an average of 15.78. Interestingly, he had a more successful IPL 2022 campaign, scoring 274 runs in 11 innings. However, Rayudu’s retirement has made the debate about his statistics irrelevant. It will be interesting to see if he continues his association with the league in a different capacity.
Sisanda Magla
After Jamieson’s injury, CSK has replaced New Zealand all-rounder Kyle Jamieson in IPL 2023 with South African fast bowler Sisanda Magala. Magala feels he needs to make use of his extensive experience in franchise cricket. However, he did not play much time with the team. Appearing in just two matches for CSK, he took one wicket at a decent economy rate of 8.50.
Given CSK’s impressive pace attack, the five-time IPL champions are unlikely to retain Magala for IPL 2024. Additionally, CSK would love to have Kyle Jamieson back in the squad as he will provide more flexibility to the franchise.
What Changes Does CSK Need To Make?
Middle order: While Chennai Super Kings have good options in the middle overs, they could benefit from someone like Suryakumar Yadav who can build partnerships and put pressure on the opposition by hitting boundaries. Having a player of Yadav’s caliber will add more depth to the team and make their middle order very strong.
CSK currently have Ben Stokes who could be a valuable addition in place of Moeen Ali or Mahesh Thikshan. Stokes not only contributed his batting skills but also his bowling skills. If Stokes is fit for the upcoming season, it will make CSK’s batting line-up even more dangerous.
Bowling: A major concern for CSK last season was their inexperienced bowling attack. Despite having options like Sisanda Magala and Ben Stokes, both players were injured early in the season which affected the team’s bowling resources. However, MS Dhoni effectively led his team to the IPL 2023 playoffs and won the trophy.
