Deepak Chahar has been an important member of the CSK franchise over the years.
Deepak Chahar has not played any competitive cricket since December 1, 2023. He is preparing to make a comeback for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2024.
Chahar is one of the main bowlers for CSK in IPL. Chahar played some useful roles not only with his bowling but also with the bat. Recently, the fast bowler spoke to ESPN Cricinfo about batting more than MS Dhoni in a single game.
“It’s good for the team because I don’t have to bat. Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) himself bats at number 8 and I bat at number 9 and you know that gives a lot of balance to the team. And look at the batsmen in front of us who have so much (depth).
In one game Mahi Bhai gave me a chance to bat in front of him and I scored some runs in that game and we won that game, Chahar said.
In the above-mentioned match, CSK smashed 154 runs against Kings XI Punjab. Chahar was encouraged to bat at number 6 above MS Dhoni and scored 39 off just 20 balls. As the match turned towards Super Kings, they won by 5 wickets.
Deepak Chahar also talks about strength training that helps him increase his speed. He further added, “When I played in 2018, I bowled around 140k. When you play regularly you don’t get a chance to do strength training and your speed slows down.

Chahar talks about CSK’s batting depth
Chennai Super Kings have always been known for their batting depth. Chahar mentioned how his long batting line-up helped him post a good score, despite falling behind by four wickets once in the powerplay. “I can give you a game example.
It was the first game in Dubai after Covid. The first game was against Mumbai. We were 40-4 (24-4), and from there we scored 160 runs. Go,” said Chahar.
“Rutu (Gaikwad) and Jadeja are playing and they start hitting from the 14th over. Other teams don’t because they don’t have that much depth in their batting,” Chahar said.
The right-arm pacer also talked about adding different shots to his batting repertoire, which will come in handy in the death overs. “So, I’m trying to develop some shots with the bat as well, because when you bat at No. 8 or No. 9, you only play three-four balls. So, you have to hit those balls with different shots. Use different shots.”
Chahar was unable to play in the South Africa tour and Afghanistan T20 due to his father’s illness. IPL 2024 gives them an opportunity to stake their claim in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.
