BEN STOKES’S BIOGRAPHY

One of the most explosive all-rounders of the modern era, Ben Stokes is an England international playing for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. Born on 4 June 1991 in Christchurch, New Zealand, Stokes moved to England at the age of 12. He is an aggressive left-handed batsman with a penchant for big hits and is capable of playing big innings. Stokes is also an expert with the ball. Bowling at great pace, he has a knack for creating breakthroughs for his team when nothing else is working.

From making his one-day home debut against Surrey in 2009 to helping his country win their first World Cup in 2019, Stokes’ journey in English football has been nothing short of extraordinary. At The Oval in 2009, Stokes made his home ODI debut for Durham. He was also selected for the Under-19 World Cup in 2009. After slowly progressing through the lower ranks, he finally found his breakthrough for the Three Lions in an One-Day International (ODI) against Ireland in August 2011. Since then he has become a player. Part of the England cricket team in all formats of the game.

Few cricketers have experienced ups and downs like Stokes. The English all-rounder was on course to help his country win a second T20 World Cup in 2016, while West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes off his bowling to win the trophy for the West Indies. But Stokes overcame the disappointment and had one of his best seasons in 2017. His impressive performance in the 2017 Champions Trophy earned him a place in the ‘Team of the Tournament’.

He was included in ICC’s 2017 and 2018 World ODI XIs for his efforts. The next World Cup in 2019 proved to be his redemption point. In particular, in the final, Stokes was instrumental in England’s title win over New Zealand at Lord’s. He scored an unbeaten 84 to tie the match. England won the Super Over based on the boundary count rule. Stokes also impressed in the Indian Premier League. He started his IPL journey in 2017 with Rising Pune Supergiants (now defunct) who signed him for Rs. He bought it for 14.5 crores. He repaid the faith that season with a century and three Man of the Match medals. In 2018, Rajasthan Royals bought him for Rs. He was bought for 12.5 crores and became the most expensive player in the auction.

Stokes played 107 not out innings in 2020. However, Stokes played only one game in the 2021 IPL and withdrew from the competition in 2022 to focus more on his country’s Test team. He once again became a part of IPL 2023 after being signed by Chennai Super Kings in the auction for a whopping price of 16.25 crores.
